Why are Radio Talents Absent from the Media Guardian Top 100?

The Media Guardian Top 100 list has been announced which I have summarised in three minutes here:

 

 

However, with Chris Evans, Sarah Koening and Ashley Tabor making the list, there is a clear lack of radio professionals on that list with only our beloved industry making up 6% of the chart. To overcome this, I want to look at some of the radio talent that should be on that list:

 

1. Chris Moyles

 

Love him or hate him, you can not deny that Chris Moyles has an influence over the radio industry. Whilst his RAJAR will not be out till February 2016 looking at his Facebook page he has 245,000 likes whilst 3.1 million followers on Twitter. Chris has come from the BBC and bought his audience to Radio X with an estimated 1 million listeners (my estimation). This comes from weekly topping the Itunes Podcast chart with his weekly highlights hour package and staying throughout the week in the Top 7.

2. Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott, manager of the BBC Iplayer Radio App has changed the way we listen to BBC Radio. We now have the opportunity to download radio shows from across the network. I do this weeekly for Stephanie Hirst’s Nothing But The 90’s on BBC Manchester. I like the fact as well that you can now save songs from the radio app when it is broadcasting on air. This opens a whole new future media dimension where considerations of the artists take place. It is a great way of the BBC promoting their BBC Music content showcasing the different concerts and radio broadcasts where the artists have performed. For example, by searching Florence and the Machine one can see Florence in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge along with her Glastonbury set.

 

3. James Rea

James Rea has been the controller of Global Radio news and LBC for a couple of years now. However, this past year James has catapulted LBC in to the listeners ears , inreasing RAJARs and transforming a London radio station into a national. A day does not go by where LBC’s content is shared across social media, transfered into newspaper headlines or creating a reaction. Whether its Katie Hopkins, Jeremy Corbyn or Nick Ferrari- LBC is making and reflecting the news. A special mention here goes out for James O’Briens #MysteryHour my highlight of the week on a Thursday lunchtime.
